PLEASE READ!

Hi AEC309ers,
#1 - a couple of your posts are in draft - so we can read them and can't comment. Please officially publish them so we can comment.

#2  - I like how this is getting started - describing your plans is good. Let your creativity and honesty show in your observations, and go beyond the superficial.

24 hour fast

I have decided to partake in the 24 hour fast. I figured with food and I being such good friends, it would be best to only keep us separated for 24 hours. I know this will be a less than thrilling experience because I have experienced 24 hours without eating, maybe not for the right reasons but Ive found myself food-less for 24 hours a time or two before and its no fun. I hope that by fasting with the intention of fasting will be able to change my perspective on it. You always hear that fasting will flush your body of toxins and all the other bad things, so I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised on the other side of this, after I get some food in me that is. I plan to do this in the next few days, my plan is to figure out my least active day, and fast through that. I am sure water will be my best friend through all this, helping me to fight the hunger. Luckily I sometimes don't eat much until the afternoon so I think the beginning will be fine but when it reaches the afternoon I may be hit with a rush of hunger. We will see how this goes!

3 days, 2 dollars, one shrunk stomach

I plan to do the $2 a day for 3 days. This should be interesting to try and do because i have a very fast metabolism so my body processes food quickly. Ramen noodles seem to be the consensus on how to achieve this, but I also look forward to finding other inexpensive ways to sustain a meal and keep myself going. I plan to begin this on Sunday November 3rd and continue it through Tuesday. I plan to keep myself busy with other rigorous activities to keep my mind off the hunger

24 Hour Fast

Morgan Forsee
October 29, 2013

For the hunger challenge, I am going to fast for 24 hours. I work on Saturday, November 2 and after I eat supper is when I am going to start the fast. I work at Halloween Express and I will constantly be moving helping customers, answering the phone and picking costumes off the floor. I was going to try to start my fast the morning before work, but since I will be constantly up and have no down time for 7 hours at work, I decided to wait. I will probably be very hungry. When I wake up in the morning is when I am the hungriest and I will have to wait until that evening to eat. Hopefully water will help subdue the hunger

Rigorous activity + hunger challenge = hopefully losing some weight!

I climb at the JC 2-3 times per week, that won't be changing, so perhaps I'll be able to better experience the challenge. I think the Ramen idea is a no-brainer, water is free (and probably all anyone should drink anyway), thoughts on store-brand crystal light? It's cheap, has electrolytes...

I'll probably carb up the night before, is that cheating? Shouldn't be! I'll be starting the hunger challenge next Monday, if I'm not in class Wednesday you'll know I've died, don't worry about contacting the authorities though, it literally doesn't even matter :)

$2 for 3 days

Will Doran

I plan to go 3 days while only spending $2 per day. This is going to be extremely difficult since i probably spend around $15/day on food. Grocery shopping will be a key component in this challenge. I plan to buy only Ramen Noodles. This is going to be a hard 3 days because in the past 4 years of college, I have completely burnt myself out on Ramen. I used to put different things in my Ramen such as eggs and spices and meat, however i cannot do that this time because it will be to much money. Hopefully Ramen is nutritious enough to get me through each day and seeing my friends eat whatever they want won't be to big of a problem for me.

New adventures...

I am going to do the $2 per day for 3 days challenge.  My expectations are to be very hungry, I'm 6'7" and I am always eating, so I think any of the challenges would be difficult, but their are a few foods out there that can be had for pretty cheap.  I know I can do the challenge because I spend even less when I have days where I travel long distances, but then I usually make up for it the next day. I think if I ration out my meals and spread them throughout the day and try to keep the amount of activities down then I wont burn as many calories and wont need to replenish what I lost. In the morning I plan to have maybe a few eggs which say I have 2 eggs in the morning thats 40 cents, then later in the day have Ramon noodles which are like 15 cents per package. So at least the eggs provide some protein in the morning, then the Ramon noodles are just tasty and something that is really cheap. I will just drink water because the price is super cheap.  So if I have two eggs in the morning then two packages of Ramon noodles for lunch and two for dinner then I would have spent one dollar, then I have a little room for water to be added in as well.  I think this is the best way to go through the whole challenge.

Why we do the Hunger Challenge

  •  1.1 billion people live on less that $1/day; 854 million of them suffer under-nutrition and hunger (calorie deficit).

  • 2.7 billion people live on less than $2/day; with $2 per day, most hunger (calorie) problems solved, but not malnutrition.

  •  At an income between $2 and $10 per day people eat more meat, dairy products, fruits, vegetables & edible oils, causing rapid growth in demand for raw agricultural commodities (“Bennett’s law”).
Do we really understand what this is like? Can we make good policy without this understanding? I think we’ll be able to consider the impacts of proposed policies much better if we understand others’ perspectives. For more information on worldwide hunger, check out this map from the UN.
