Why we do the Hunger Challenge

  •  1.1 billion people live on less that $1/day; 854 million of them suffer under-nutrition and hunger (calorie deficit).

  • 2.7 billion people live on less than $2/day; with $2 per day, most hunger (calorie) problems solved, but not malnutrition.

  •  At an income between $2 and $10 per day people eat more meat, dairy products, fruits, vegetables & edible oils, causing rapid growth in demand for raw agricultural commodities (“Bennett’s law”).
Do we really understand what this is like? Can we make good policy without this understanding? I think we’ll be able to consider the impacts of proposed policies much better if we understand others’ perspectives. For more information on worldwide hunger, check out this map from the UN.

  2. To AEC 309 Students - the blog is now open. It's time to vote on which hunger challenge you want me to do - the 2 day subsistence diet or the 3 day/$2/day option.

    1. I would like to see you do the 3 day, $2 per day option. I think that would be interesting.

  4. 3 days, on $2/ day. It would be interesting to hear what food you would eat and how hungry you may be between meals. It's interesting to hear how resourceful people can be when pressured easily by money!
