After My Fast
I finally finished my 24 hour fast. When I was over the 24 hour mark I was at the mall so I got to eat some great mall food! After going an entire day without eating I really understand the hunger many people around the world experience for sometimes longer. The hardest part for me was knowing I have food, but I can't eat it. Many hungry people around the world do not have those types of opportunities. They have no idea when they are going to get to eat next. I feel like I was not as hungry as some of the people around the world because I ate, then started my fast. People in the United States and other richer countries have such easy access to food. I know exactly when I was going to start my fast and the minute I was able to eat again. To me, it is really sad knowing some people out there have no idea when they are going to get food. Today in class we talked about the "How to Feed the World" article written by Mark Bittman. One of the things someone agreed with him about was the figures regarding the amount of food wasted, the amount of food going to bio-fuels and a couple other measures. Bittman claims that 1/3 of all food produced is wasted. After doing the fast and realizing how hungry some people are, it really concerns me that I may be wasting 1/3 of my food, when that could have gone to some of these hungry people. I am going to try my hardest to waste as little food as possible from now on. This fast really made me more concerned about the amount of food I will be preparing so that I will not waste any!
