Stocking up before the fast - Will Martin

In the spirit of solidarity, I too will be participating in the hunger challenge.  I have a little experience with something similar to a subsistence diet from my time in Brazil.  I lived with a host family in Bahia for about a month.  During that time, I would say that black beans and rice made up 90% of my diet.  I probably ate more beef than what most people on a subsistence diet would eat, but it still isn't that much of a stretch for me to imagine eating that way for three days.  I also can imagine what it's like to eat for $2/day, especially since I could get by with beans and rice.  What is harder for me to imagine, though, is going 24 hours without any food... And so that's exactly what I'm going to do for my hunger challenge.

For lunch today I went to the Good Foods Coop.  My plan was to stock up on good, somewhat nutritious calories before beginning the fast.  I say "somewhat," because you'll see in the photo that a mini bag of potato chips was part of my meal.  That brings me to part of this challenge that will be most difficult.  I love to snack.  I have a hard time going between two meals without eating, much less going a full day without anything to snack on.  In that respect, I think this challenge will be good for me.  I often snack because I say that I'm hungry, but it's probably more habit than anything else.  Maybe after this short fast I'll know what it really means to be hungry.

  1. welcome aboard, Will. You lunch sure looks good to me two days into my $2/day. And I'll bet even more so for you.

  2. Will, how in the world do you prepare such a good looking meal? Tomorrow we can discuss meal preparations while I begin designing my 3 day food supply. Do you think there is a way to incorporate the UK Ag deli into my $2 budget? Man I hope so!
